Cannot insert anything in footer. Am using an A5 page

What happens when you try? Can you give us some detail on the steps you're
using, what type of document it is, etc.?

Thanks for your promt reply.
I am using a 25 page A5 Word doc and I want to add some footnotes and page
numbers. I get the dotted footer OK and the blinking cursor but try to type
in something and nothing happens although the cursor remains there like it's
not its business!
Tried inserting page numbers. Same thing happens. When using INSERT - page
numbers nothing happens and when viewing the footer and try again the page
number of the current page is displayed but as soon as another page is
displayed off they go.
Tried on an A4 page format too. Still no result, same as above. Tried
matching footer's margins to the printer's as advocated in the HELP box but -
nothing. I've been at this for about a month, but now I gave up and asked
for help!

If you are using View | Header and Footer and then Switch Between Header and
Footer to get to the footer pane and can't type in it, then either the
document is protected in some way or it is corrupt; see

Thanks for your reply. I'll try your suggestion as soon as possible and post

Hi,
I tried the suggestions re my query but it seemed that nothing worked. So I
had to do it the hard way. I opened a new doc and cut and pasted the doc on
to the new paragraph by para so as to find the culprit. I didn't but the
pages are there OK.

Sounds like the document was corrupt.

I think so too. But why was it corrupted in the first place? I am using
Word everyday with all sorts of docs and it works OK. On second thoughts I
downloaded this from the net, but I have dozens from the net too.

I don't think anyone is ever sure how or why a document becomes corrupt. As
long as you can figure out a way to uncorrupt it (I'm told "Open and Repair"
in Word 2003 works wonders), that's all you need to know.

Thanks Suzanne. I'll take a note of that cos it seems that nowadays nothing
is safe for long on the PC!!

Yesterday I spoke too soon. I opened my doc which I thought it has been
fixed and found that we were back to square one. Page nos disappeared once
again! Closed doc, opened and repaired but no joy!
I tried to create an index and the pages were shown (in the index) if
selected. Otherwise nothing!

Probably I scrap Word and try something else such as PDF.
