Cannot insert in or select text with mouse

I have Office 2007 trial version installed on my Vista Home Premium system.
In a Word document, I cannot insert the cursor nor select text with my mouse.
I have to move the curser with the arrow keys, then backspace, delete, etc.
to make any changes. This is not a mouse issue, as it is the same problem
with my laptop touch pad.
Can anyone help?
