cannot insert/play .avi file or any movie files

Hi All

I have a trouble inserting a movie clip (.avi) into Microsoft PowerPoint
(Office 2002 on XP).

Method 1:
When I go "Insert" > "Movies and Sounds" > "Movie from File" > then try to
pick an .AVI file up from the desktop > I get an error message.
"Cannot display this type of sound or movie."

Method 2:
When I go "Insert" > "Object" > tick on "Create from file" > browse and pick
the AVI file from the same location, desktop > I get an error message.
"There is no driver installed on your system."
After I close this error, then it says "The server application, source file,
or item can't be found, or returned an unknown error. You may need to
reinstall the server application."

Action Taken:
- tried to play on "mplay32.exe" but I get "There is no driver installed on
your system."
- tried a different AVI file > doesn't play on mplay32.exe > cannot be
inserted on PowerPoint
- windows/office update > all done
- office repair
- tested the movie outside of PPT by opening Windows Media Player > work
- upgraded Win Media Player from ver 8.0 to ver 10.0
- installed Codec Installation Packages

- "start" > "run" > "regsvr32 /u "\officeav.dll"" to disable NAV Office
Plug-in > Error: "LoadLibrary ("officeav.dll") failed - the specified module
couldn't be found."
- checked the MCI registry > add "(name) ivf, (type)REG_SZ,
(data)MPEGVideo2" to "MCI32"

Extensions

Do you have any idea what codec is being used to compress the file? Better
yet, can you tell us the source of the file?

Although I am unsure, I get the following information from AVICodec that I
downloaded from http://avicodec.duby.info/
The AVI file that I want to insert onto PPT slide is that I filmed by my
Cannon IXY digital camera. I tried several different AVI files that I took
by a different digital camera too. I read on the net PowerPoint doesn't
play movie clips in general but QuickTime should do. However, I don't have
a convertor for that..

How can I find out what codec is being used to compress the file?

Ah, a camera. Many of the camera's on the market call their file format an
avi. While technically correct it can be misleading. As a quick test try
changing the file extention to mpg and see if they work.

Oooh! It worked with .mpg! I didn't know that I could simply change the
file extension like that. I thought I had to put it in through a movie
convertor.
