Cannot insert symbols in PPT 2004 (MacOffice 2004)

I am new to Mac.I purchased a MacBook 3 weeks before. Intel based
processor. Mac Os X, version 10.4.8. I installed a Office: Mac 2004,
Student and Teacher Edition. I transported my windows files to my Mac.
I didn't have too much problems.
The problem is while preparing new presentations for my lectures I
cannot insert objects (symbols) like arrows. There is nothing
inserted. Some of the symbols which can be inserted are different from
their characters. I am trying to use formatting palette. For example
when I insert a checkmark there is a "4" in the text. I am trying to
choose a bullet from Zapf Dingbats, I see a different character, "an I
instead of a filled square". My keyboard selection is Turkish-QWERTY-
PC. My Office:mac Language is English.
I need help from this community although I am seeking for help from
local people of apple.

as long as you have the Zapf Dingbat font installed, then inserting symbols
usually works as expected, and a 4 in Zapf Dingbats is a check mark.

Once you have the number 4, select it, then manually set it to Zapf Dingbats.
What do you get?

I am also warned about some missing fonts on my computer that; "The
following fonts are unavailable on your computer. Powerpoint will
replace these fonts with similar fonts or you can reinstall these
fonts."
Listed fonts are:
MS PGothic and three Chinese or some other type of Asian fonts.
I don't know if it is related with the problem.

I Should add something else.
When Zapf D. is selected as current font in font window and I press 4,
the font automatically changes to Lucida Grande. Zapf D. does not stay
in the window.

Could be, but the "already 4" bothers me. Type something in Arial or Times
New Roman, either one. Type the number 4. Now, go back and select the 4,
THEN change it to ZD -- do you get:
- a 4 that looks like it did before (in other words, nothing changed)
- a 4 in a different font
- a check mark

It does sound as though you don't have Zapf Dingbats active. In Windows this
happens all the time, because Windows can lie to the user.

Which ZD do you have? Apple dFont? Adobe Type 1? Something else?

You might try one of those font cache clearing applications. I use Font Nuke
from http://homepage.mac.com/jpietry/apps/fontnuke/.

Yes, that's some crap that for some unknown reason PowerPoint wants
installed. Don't worry about it.

I downloaded Font Nuke but I'm afraid I could not use it in the
correct way that my problem does exist.

Even Font nuke did not solve the problem. It is going on.

In reading the above, now I wonder if something is just wrong in Microsoft
applications. What about any other applications? TextEdit? Apple Mail? Any
others that enable changes in font.
