Cannot install MS Excel 2004 alongside Office 2008 -*help* :-)

I read this entire thread and thought phew - finally an answer to my issue. I live in VBA macro spreadsheets at work and must go into a VMware Fusion VM to do any work, which is a drag since I prefer being native on my Mac. i tried to install 2004 (which was on this machine before, and I keep getting "Office Setup Assistant quit unexpectedly". I also tried to copy the entire CD to my desktop and then launching that way, and I got the same thing. I am not sure why it is doing this. I am running Office 12.1.3 on a MacBook Air. I cannot find any "Custom Install" as was previously described in this thread. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!
