cannot install office updates

Using XP Professional and have just installed Office 2003 standard. Cannot
install the security updates for excel, word, etc. Problems began when Word
and Excel locked when trying to "Save As". Went through the trouble shooting
list and looked at the 908531 issue but will not attempt to update registry
manually.
