Cannot install trial OneNote

P

Pat Phelan

I have downloaded the trial version of OneNote. When I
go to install it, it goes through the expanding *.CAB,
then I get a "Fatal Error During Installation" message.

I have tried clearing the IE cache and downloading again
as suggested in an earlier post. It does not work.

I have Windows XP Professional running on a Dell
Dimension 8250. There is plenty of hard drive space. I
have every other MS Office program you can think of and
have never encountered such a problem. I have never had
a problem installing any program on my machine.

I would really like to try the program; any suggestions,
please!

Thank you.

Two more things: I have disabled virus protection
software before attempting the installation. I also
tried installing from SAFE MODE, with no luck.

Is there some kind of a log file that the ONENOTE
installation creates? I thought I ran across one the
other day but now cannot find it.

Many thanks.

Hmmm.

Have you tried downloading from another machine? You
seem to be doing all of the right things, but it's still
not working for you ;(

If you want to troubleshoot using the Setup log file,
follow these instructions (Look for a OneNote-named file
instead of an Office-named one).

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;826511

There may be several directories named "temp" on your
hard drive. To find the real temp directory for your
profile, open up a command prompt and type:

echo %temp%

The path that appears will be the one that has the log
files referenced in the KB article above.

You could also order the trial CD from Microsoft:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/onenote/prodinfo/trial.msp
x

Yeah, yeah, it's $8 for shipping, but how much of your
time (at whatever hourly rate you think you're worth <g>)
have you spent on this?

Below is the log file generated by OneNote when it tries
to install.

The F: drive they refer to is a virtual drive that
contains DELL files, etc., put on there by Dell. It's a
partition on my C: drive. The letters are all messed up
because of CDs, DVDs, etc. Does this help any?

Thanks for the link. I'm not sure I'm smart enough to
figure it out though.

You're right about the time, etc. But I just think I
should be able to figure it out!

If I would order the CD though . . . aren't they the same
program? Would I have any better luck with the CD? And
if it too would refuse to install, then what? I've been
told by MS that trial versions are not supported, which
is fine, but how do you expect me to buy it if I can't
even use the trial?

I'm confused!

Thanks.

Based on the log file you posted, the download is intact
(i.e. not corrupt), and having the trial installed from
CD would likely yield the same result. You've just saved
$8!

There's something funky about the F: drive. You
mentioned that it is a partition on the C: Drive. Can
you go into the Disk Management utilities (they're a part
of the Computer Management MMC snap-in) and report back
what this partition looks like in relation to the C:
Drive and the physical drive where they both reside?

Another thought:
Do you have less than 1.5GB of free space on your C:
Drive? According to this:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;825933

The OneNote installer might have had to move on to
inspect the F: drive because it couldn't put the MSOCache
on the C: drive. BUt your log file doesn't show an
attempt to inspect the C: drive for MSOCache
suitability...

OK. I'm really serious about this thing. I had gotten
the drive letters confused. C, naturally, is my primary
drive. For some reason G (not F) is the virtual drive,
which is a partition of C. My F drive is a second
physical hard drive.

I went so far as to remove the second hard drive from the
computer and then try the installation. I got the same
error message, except that at the end of the log this
time it substituted Drive C instead of Drive F, that is
it failed to determine if drive C was removable.

Drive C is 55GB; half of the space is free.

I'll bet this is the problem. Tell me what to do. I
looked in disk management and it lists all my drives BUT
there are no letter designations for C, F, and G. There
are 5 line entries, but under the column VOLUME there are
no entries for the first three lines. These lines
represent my hard drives (2) and the virtual drive. The
fourth and fifth lines are designated D (zip drive) and E
(CD drive).

Disk 0 (my C drive) is 39 MB FAT Healthy EISA
Configuration) and 55.84 GB NTFS Healthy (Active)

Disk 1 (second hard drive) is 55.91 GB FAT32 and Healthy
(Active).

If I had an email for you I could email you a copy of the
report.

Does that make any sense? How can I get letters assigned
to these entries?
