I cannot install updates to Microsoft Office. I get the following
message: "You cannot install Office 2008 SP1 Update (12.1.0) on this
volume. A version of the software required to install this update was
not found on this volume." Anyone have any idea what this is about?

Usually, that specific error means that Spotlight cannot see some or all of
the existing version of the software.

The Installer uses Apple's Spotlight to search for a very specific set of
files that it needs to change or remove. If you have configured Spotlight
on your machine to not index things such as the Applications folder or the
Preferences folder, the installation will think you do not have the software
it is trying to update installed.

It may be trying to look on one of your external drives.

If you disconnect the external drives, you will often get better luck.

Cheers
