Cannot Link Excel Worksheet into Word Document (Office '04) withLeopard

Phil

Previously, I was using a PowerMac G4 Tower (Tiger OS) with Office
2004 installed. For years, I could type reports and insert linked
Excel worksheets into my Word documents with no problem. However, I
recently purchased an iMac Core 2 Duo and installed Office 2004. Now,
I cannot link my worksheet files into Word. When I Edit>PasteSpecial
the worksheet, the far right column and bottom two or so rows show up
blank in the Word document(although the small squares that border the
worksheet make it look like something should be there).

I called Microsoft and was told the file was corrupt. However, this is
not true, since the very same files I am using still work fine on my
previous computer with Tiger installed. It also works with my
daughter's iMac Core Duo with Tiger. I have concluded it is a problem
with how Leopard works with Office 2004.

Anyone else have this problem and know how to fix it? I really need to
be able to link my worksheets into my documents!

Well, Phil, I think you've pretty much narrowed it down to being an issue of
Leopard - although I guarantee that if you post the question to the Apple
Discussions forum they'll try to pawn it off as a MS bug:)

The only thing I can suggest - although it may sound weird - is to make sure
you have the most current versions of Leopard (10.5.1), Mac Office (11.3.9)
*and* the driver for your printer - check the mfr's website for an update.

More suggestions may be forthcoming, so check back.

Hi Phil:

{Sigh} We must have a new crop of interns on the Help desk this week :)
An Excel file that is corrupt will generally not open at all, and they
should have known that.

Yes, to the best of my recollection there is an issue (I am not an Excel
person, one will be along in a moment to put me right if I have this
wrong...).

The only thing I can suggest is "Paste as picture" and "Don't link". There
was an update released when OS 10.5 came out, which aimed to cure some
issues. Make sure you have applied the latest updates.

But I have a feeling that this particular issue remains, and that there
won't be another update soon, if at all. I suspect this one will remain an
issue in 2008 as well.

No good news, I am afraid...

Cheers

I'm still looking for an answer. I would like to know if anyone else
is having this problem.

Have you read the replies you have received?

Yes, I have read the responses. Basically, it is the same response I
am getting here. I have decided to scrap MS Office and use iWork
'08. The only reason I wanted to use Office is because Excel has more
functionality than Numbers (such as regression analysis) and the Paste-
Link capability between Word and Excel. However, I only use
regression about three times a year, and I like the feel of iWork
better than Office. Microsoft Support wasn't able to answer my
problem either, so I really don't feel any loyalty there.

I'm guessing iWork will be adding more functionality in the months
ahead, so I'll just stick with it. Besides, it's an Apple product and
doesn't crash when I use it, like MS products do.
