Cannot make an entry above the table

I have a large Word document that starts with a table right at the top of
the page. Now, I decided I need to insert some material on the document
ABOVE the table. I can't figure out how to do this. I'm sure the answer is
going to be simple, but believe me I have tried numerous things with no
success.

Please help. (and don't make fun of me!)

Press Ctrl+Home to get to the very beginning of the table and then press
Enter. This will insert an empty paragraph above the table. This works only
at the beginning of the document; anywhere else it would insert a new
paragraph in the table cell.

Thanks to Suzanne Barnhill and Jeff Hall for their solutions. I followed
the procedure given below, and it worked! Now I can complete a project that
needs to be finished this week.
