Cannot make Outlook the default program for MAILTO protocol with V

J

John D

I want to set Outlook 2003 as my default email program when I click on a
MAILTO link in internet explorer. Instead, it defaults to Windows Mail. With
XP it
was very easy to set the default programs for various functions. Now when I
try to set the default program, I can't change it from MS Mail to Outlook. I
got to:

Tools
Internet Options

I then get options to:
-"Set your default programs"
But I can't find a way to set Outlook as my mail program
or this:
-"Associate a file type or protocol with a program"
Then I find the MAILTO protocol, and select "change program" but MS Mail is
my only option. I want the MAILTO protocol to open up Outlook 2003, not MS
Mail.

You can see the problem from this screenshot.

The mailto protocol is tied to Windows Mail, no oulook.

Thanks for any help

this is the one thing I hate about vista...

go into control panel, Default programs and set outlook as the default
there.

Do people ever bother reading the posts, Outlook is not listed, it is not an
option, that is the problem.

Is Outlook installed at all ?

Desktop\IE\Properties\Programs\E-Mail and if you select the little dropdown arrow in the box does it give you the option for Outlook there ?

Yes of cause?
Desktop\IE\Properties\Programs\E-Mail and if you select the little dropdown arrow in the box does it give you the option for Outlook there ?

That option is not available in IE7/Vista, there is just a "Set Programs"
button which takes you to the "Default Programs" applet again.

sorry but I don't see where you said outlook was not listed as a selection
as a option in program defaults.... many of us who provide support here
don't bother following links users post because most of what they take
screen shots of is easily explained and takes less time.

Did you go to the default programs applet - then to the top option to set
default programs yet? is outlook listed there? click on it and set it as
default for everything. This is how I fixed it when links went to mail.

Click the top link in the default programs then set outlook as the default
for everything.

Hi Diane, no Oulook is not listed in the top option of the Default Programs
applet only Windows Mail.

Have you tried detect and repair? If that doesn't fix it, I don't know what
will.

Could you at least post information on how you installed your OS and how you
installed Office in such a way that Outlook is not registered with your OS?
Have you in fact created a valid mail account and addressing service in
Outlook?
