Cannot navigate to directory from MS Word

All of the sudden, none of my MS Office software, including MS Word, will
allow me to navigate to the folders on my computer. For example, if in Word
I go to file/open and get the navigation box, as soon as I try to open the
drop down list to navigate to the file I wish to open, the software hangs.
I've even re-installed MS Office, to no avail. Anyone else experienced
this?

I found the problem in another post. The fix follows (isn't Microsoft
something else???):

Your problem is almost certainly a recent Window update.

For immediate purposes, go to the Add/Remove programs control panel and

click on the box to show updates (top right). Down near the bottom are
Windows updates. You are looking for "Security Update for Windows XP
(KB908531)". Unistall this.
