Cannot Navigate to ftp URL by Clicking on Link

I'm using OneNote 2003 (11.6360.6360) SP1 on Windows XP SP2. I can navigate
to this resource from the Address bar of Internet Explorer, but not if I
click on the URL that I type into OneNote.

ftp://ampa.caltech.edu

I get the error,

"Unable to open ftp://ampa.caltech.edu. The Internet site reports that the
item you requested could not be found. (HTTP/1.0 404)."

BTW, it would be nice to have a utility that could extract the text of Alert
windows and others using cut and paste. It would save effort of typing the
text of the message or snapping a PRNT-SCRN of the error, when contacting
support.

Pam,
To answer the FTP question, I'll quote help:
ftp: Used for hyperlinks that point to a file on an FTP (FTP: A
communication protocol that makes it possible for a user to transfer files
between remote locations on a network. This protocol also allows users to
use FTP commands, such as listing files and folders, to work with files on a
remote location.) server. To create this type of hyperlink, type the ftp://
prefix, followed by the address of the server and the path to the document
or file you want to link to- for example,
ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/readme.txt.

I am wondering if OneNote is not understanding the FTP address you are
giving it. (By the way, when I click the link, I get the couldn't be found
error too.)

For the other, I strongly recommend that you look into SnagIt from
TechSmith. You might think of it as screen capture on steroids. It does just
about anything in the way of screen captures that you would want, including
capturing the text from a screen or area.

Thanks. I suppose I'm using OneNote in a non-standard way. I'm composing
instructions for users to access the resource, not necessarily to refer to
*content* available from the FTP site, but just to connect to the resource.
A logon is necessary, so I can't really have a real file in the target of the
URL.
