Cannot now send email

I have had no problems with Outlook 6 until half way through last Sunday.
I'd used Outlook to send and receive messages earlier in the day, but when I
launched Outlook later on, it asked me to sign in (which it had never done
before) - my id and password are already filled in, but when I click on OK,
the box just keeps coming back. I can receive and read emails OK, but cannot
now send any. They just sit in my inbox. I switched on SMTP authentication
about a month ago. As far as I know, the settings have not been changed.
Anyone got any ideas?
