Cannot open 2003 except from with 2007 program

Hello!

I have office 2007. I used to be able to open attachments to my emails from
excel, word, power point created in any lower version. Now I have to save
the
attachment to my desktop, open the program, and open the attachment from
inside the program. I just upgraded my AVG virus software. Could this be
why? I like to send things as 2003 because I want to make sure the receiver
can open it if they do not have 2007. The programs look very different than
before. Can the receivier open? How do I fix this?
