Cannot Open Access MDE. Nothing Happens. Please Help!

Hi all,

Here is the situation. The Access .mde file with its .mdb and .mdw are
stored in a network drive: J drive. There are several people in the
department use the .mde file every day. Currently, a new user account
is added to the database. However, the new user, my colleague cannot
open the database on her own computer. When she clicks the database
file, it opens Microsoft Access. The title shows the file name. Then,
after the hour glass is dispeared, nothing happens. No container
window, nothing. Access opens but the database does not. Most of the
menu options are disabled, such as Tools | Startup, Window | Unhide,
etc. all disabled.

We have tried the following ways but no success:
1. "Shift" key does not work.
2. Make a copy into a local drive and try to open the copy in the local
drive, does not work.
3. Help | Detect and Repair ... does not work.
4. Shared | Exclusive is not the case because everyone else has no
problem to access the database.
5. Everyone has the same version of Access.
6. She can create/read/write/delete a notepad .txt file in the drive
and the directory. She can also open some of the other databases in the
J drive, so she has the permission for the drive and directory.
7. She can import the tables and queries from the old .mde database
into a new database,. but everything else, such as forms, reports, etc.
is ghosted out.

Other people can access to the .mde, .mdb, and .mdw files but she
cannot. We check her permission on the database at other people's
computer. She has full control permission for the database and her
account is in the .mdw file. She cannot login the database in other
people's computer but not on her own computer. We are not sure if the
database is corrupted or not and think it may not be the case, because
everyone else does not have problems. We research the problem online
and try anything that we can think of to help her, but no success. We
are cluelss now. Any suggestions and comments will be really
appreciated. Thank you!

Can the person create a blank new database...a test form...does that work?

I mean, forget about that one particular mde, but just try creating regular
mdb file.

And, even better, do you have the original mdb...try placing that on the
machine, and THEN creating mde out of it...does that work?

So, try a test mdb file...not related to the above...how does that go?

Thank you very much for your quick response, Albert. We will try it and
let you know how it goes. Thank you again.

I had a user who's shortcut for opening the database had somehow changed
from:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11\msaccess.exe" "..."
to this:
"C:\Program Files\Micros2~\Office11\msaccess.exe" "..."

She had the exact same symptoms as what you discribe. Once I spotted it and
changed the target path back to using the full folder name it worked again.

Thank you for your reply, Bill! I will let my colleague know about
that. It could be the problem. Thanks again!
