Cannot open an e-mailed Excel document

Have Office 2003 - all current updates as per website, cannot open e-mailed
Excel spreadsheets/lists/documents?

Are they asking your for a password? What exactly is happening when you try
open the spreadsheet? Can you open spreadsheets from your HD?
