Cannot open any Word 2003 documents

I have a fairly new computer: HP Pavilion Slimline s7520n PC.
Recently I haven't been able to open up any documents what-so-ever. Neither
can I open up Word in general. Only way it opens is in safe-mode. I haven't
installed anything recently nor any drivers so I don't know what to do.

Anytime I try to open word it hangs at the loading screen (the first box
that comes up with Win word 2003 in it). It doesn't respond and only way to
end it is by shutting of winword.exe from the processes. I've tried updating
through this site but it hangs when it gets to 10% of scanning.

Any help would be appreciated.

recreates it it's still corrupted...and I can't update using
office.microsoft.com

I don't know how you can tell that a brand new Word-created normal.dot is
corrupt (so corrupt that you can't start Word), but if it is then Word
itself must be corrupt. If you can't start Word you can't run Detect and
Repair and, if nothing in the link garfield-n-odie posted helps I don't see
you have any option but to reinstall Word but make sure you delete (or
rename) the Word registry keys before you do it.
