Cannot open backend

We have an Access 97 database which users can access the front end without
any problems.
The issue is that we need to get to the back end but someone in the past has
somehow locked it dwon so that if we try to open the backend, nothing happens.
Access opens but thats it - no prompt, no messages nothing, just blank.
Any ideas what we can do here.
We can't even export the data to another database. We have tried to copy the
file and rename but still the same problem.

Try holding down the shift key when you open it. If it was secured you'd
get an error message.
