Victor,
when i try to open an compiled html help file using
windows XP home edition and office XP. an error message
appeared and said " Help, Cannot open the file:
mk@msitstore:c:\***.chm "

Here are some things to try:

1) Use MJ's Help Diagnostics to check that all the help viewer
components are properly installed and registered.

http://helpware.net/downloads/index.htm#MJs

(The only section of the MJ's Help Report that is relevant to your
problem is the one headed "HTML Help Run-time Components".)

2) Use Microsoft Critical Update 811630 to upgrade the help viewer
components. This is available from here:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=811630

3) Delete or rename the file hh.dat, which you should find in this
directory:

\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Microsoft\HTML
Help

The hh.dat file stores user-specific information on all the HTML Help
files on your system (favourite topics, search history, etc.), and can
cause the files to misbehave if it has somehow been corrupted. Windows
will create a new version of hh.dat when you next open any .chm file.

4) Empty your Temporary Internet Files directory. A full TIF directory
can cause HTML Help files to misbehave.

5) See the following pages for further guidance on how to resolve
XP-specific help problems:

I have tried every steps you recommented. But they do not
work.
The file i tried to open in XP home edition can be opened
in 2000 Pro chinese version.
Any more suggestions?

Victor,
I have tried every steps you recommented. But they do not
work. The file i tried to open in XP home edition can be
opened in 2000 Pro chinese version.

Is the problem limited to one help file or all the help files on the
system affected?

If there is a problem with one file only, can you verify that there
are no "special" characters in the file name or in the path to the
file? The HTML Help engine sometimes struggles with file or path names
that contain characters other than A-Z, 0-9, and underscores.

If none of the help files opens, make sure that the file type
associations in Windows are correctly set up. See under the "HH.Exe"
heading at http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_h.htm.

If you continue to have problems, please re-run MJ's Help Diagnostics
and then post the contents of the report to this newsgroup (or send it
to me off-list).
