Kirch,

I assume you are trying out Project Professional. Without Project
Server several items in the menus do not work, including Enterprise
Options.

Did you try stepping through the online tutorial? You should be
entering your resources on the Resource Sheet.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Hi Kirch,

As far as I know there is no tutorial on setting up Project Server,
and it probably *isn't* a good place to start exploring what Microsoft
Project can do to help you create schedules for your projects.

You really should start by understanding what Microsoft Project does
and then move on to Project Server. For tutorials on using Microsoft
Project see:

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/project/FX100649011033.aspx

This links to the Help and How-to page for Microsoft Project 2007.
You can view demos or read additional help screens.

Project Server 2007 also has a page where you can work through the
"Quick Start" information. See:

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/projectserver/FX100739841033.aspx

Microsoft does make extensive documentation for Project Server. I'd
start with the Project Guide. See:

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/projectserver/HA102039781033.aspx

Fellow MVP Mike Glen also has an excellent series of
articles/tutorials you can work through. See:

http://project.mvps.org/mike's_tutorials.htm

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Julie-
Is Project Server part of Microsoft Project? All I want to do is to assign
resources in project.
I have 3 employees and as I am working through "project" it seems like it
sould be a straightforwrd process to assign specific tasks to specific people.

Thanks-

Reading the responses to your original post, it sounds like you are using
Microsoft Project Professional 2007 with Project Server 2007. Is this true?
If so, you must create a Project Server login account in Microsoft Project
so that you can connect to your Project Server system and then access the
resources in the Enterprise Resource Pool. Refer to the following FAQ for
the steps to create the login account:

http://www.projectserverexperts.com/ProjectServerFAQKnowledgeBase/CreatePMLoginAccount.aspx

After you create the login account, exit Microsoft Project 2007 and then
relaunch the software and connect to Project Server. You can build your
projec team using the resources in the Enterprise Resource Pool using
Tools - Build Team from Enterprise. Hope this helps.

Also, if you are using Project Server 2007, then please post your future
questions in the microsoft.public.project.server newsgroup, as this
newsgroup is dedicated to the Microsoft Project desktop application only.

Hi Kirch,

Microsoft Office Project Professional or Microsoft Office Project
Standard can both be used to create project files (and resources)
without using Project Server. If you downloaded a trial version you
most likely downloaded either Professional or Standard, not Project
server.

See the first and last URLs I listed below. Both should help you work
with Project (not Project Server) in setting up a project file with
resources and assign those resources to tasks.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Dale-

It looks like I am trying out Microsoft Office Project 2007- I do not know
about Project Server 2007.

"5. Enter the URL for Your Project Server instance."

What is the URL?

If you are not using Project Server 2007, then ignore my last response. I
thought you were using Project Server 2007 because you used a Project Server
term ("enterprise resource pool") in your original question.

Kirch

OK then...back to the original question but asked differently-
Do I need Project Server to set up resources? Can I assign specific tasks to
different employees (Resources)with this trial version of MicrosoftOffice
Project?

The tutorials and help that I have read through takes me through the tools
menu-
When I open the enterprise options in the tools menu the only option that is
available to me at that point is Microsoft office project server accounts-
The others are greyed out. These are the options that I understand I need to
get through in order to add resources-

If you are using the Standard version of Microsoft Project 2007, you can
enter resources in your project using View - Resource Sheet. Simply type
the names of your resources, along with other relevant information, such as
the Standard Rate. Hope this helps.
