Cannot open excel .dat file?

I recieved an email with excel attachments .dat read only. Excel (2003) would
not open them claiming an invalid file format. Any advice on how to solve
this problem?

Hi,

Two ideas - and only ideas,
1. they are not acceptable file formats
2. you are trying to open them from outside Excel and the Import Wizard or
file parser doesn't run unless you try to open the files from inside of Excel.

Please ask your sender to deactivate the .rtf choice in Outlook and to
re-send attachment.
