cannot open excel file for mail merge

When I try to open excel file to complete the mail merge
Word gives me the error. "Word is unable to open data
source." Why? What do I check? I have had not problem in
the past working using excel file with Word mail merges.
Both the word file and the execl wooksheet look okay.

Have you upgraded Word/Office?

Otherwise, I would start with the assumption that the Excel file might be
corrupt (no idea why), create a new one and try copying in the contents of
the old one.
