Cannot open Excel X files in Excel 2004

This is an issue related to the difference in versions. These files
still open in Excel X, where they were created, but not in Excel 2004.


If the file has a macro, and I answer the macro warning with "open
file" it behaves as though I had opened cancel.

Files without macros simply do nothing - no explanation, nada. Yet all
these files open just fine in Excel X. Any suggestions on what I can
try?

Sorry, I meant "as though I had pressed cancel".

I can't imagine what might be the problem. Excel X and 2004 files are
exactly the same format. If you email me one of the problem files I'll be
glad to take a look.
