Cannot open existing presentations and documents in Office 2007

I have an HP laptop running Vista. I originally installed Office 2003 Home
and student and then upgraded to 2007 Home and Student. It has been working
well for some time now. In the last 2 weeks I have been unable to open any of
my existing documents that I created with 2007. Powerpoint and excel just
hang when trying to open them. Here is what I have tried so far:

1. Uninstalled and reinstalled Office 2007 Home and Student.

2, Booted up in safe mode and then opened the files in powerpoint and excel.
This worked fine.

3. used Powerpoint viewer to open the presentations. This worked fine.

4. Removed the documents from the list that office uses to prevent files
from being opened that have crashed the program. (did not help)

All of these thing have done nothing to resolve my issue. Even after
uninstalling and reinstalling office I still get a message that the file I am
trying to open caused a serious error and do I still want to open it. When I
click yes it just hangs. It seems that uninstalling it does not remove all
its history. Also I have sent these files to friends and they have no issues
opening the documents. Can anyone provide me with some possible solution to
this issue? Please help!!

Thanks

PS - Here is further clairification:

I dont have the exact message because it only gives and error message some
times. Most of the time it just hangs when trying to open the presentation or
spreadsheet. The message I have received even after unistalling /
reinstalling Ofiice is some thing like "the last time this document was
opened it cause a serious error or crash.. do you want to proceed with
opening the document" When I chose yes it just hangs. This is for all
presentations. I know they are good because I can send them to others and it
works fine. I can open the programs and create a new spreadsheet or
presentation, save it, and then try to open the saved doc and it just hangs
as well.
