cannot open file _ corrupt, in use, or of a type not recognized

I am trying to open a PowerPoint presentation in Office 2004 and keep
getting this error message - PowerPoint cannot open the file Macintosh
HD:etc. The file may be corrupt , in use, or of a type not recognized
by PowerPoint.

Any suggestions on how to get around this? I have tried to insert
slides into new presentation. The kids were working on this in Office
2004 then worked on it in Office X and then came back to 2004. Please
help us.
