Cannot open files with multiple sheets

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel My colleagues in the UK send me dumped MIS data within XL workbook comprising of 5 or 6 worksheets, but we have recently expanded the workbooks to 7 or more sheets. If in the .xls format (preferable as many of my staff overseas not upgraded to most recent XL), simply cannot open. If .xlsx, can open but still takes over 2 minutes to open each workbook! Extremely frustrating .....

You have not specified which update level your version of Office is at.
Make sure it is the latest.

But the problem is almost certainly "not enough memory on that Mac!" You
need better than 2 GB of RAM to open big Excel files: the more other apps
you have running, the more you need. 8 GB is a nice round number for
serious work :)

Ask them to send it in .xlb format. That format will perform much better
with huge data files: it is a compressed binary.

Same with .xlsx and .xlsb: the "b" format is compressed so it needs less
memory to open.

And switch to Normal view: Page Layout View is VERY slow with big data
files.

Cheers

Hi there!

Version 12.2.3 (091001). Latest Installed Update: 12.2.3.

I have 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3 memory.

Still happens with other apps closed.

They have already tried .xlsb and that says that the file is corrupted.

I always opn in Normal view ......

Would you like me to send you the document so you can have a look at? Would you like my UK IT colleagues in UK liaise with you??

Cheers,

Steven

Hi John!

Cheers for that. I have just sent you thru an example.

Many thanks in advance for your assistance.

Thanks Steven:

The Workbook in question contained several thousand machine-generated
defined names.

I suspect that was hitting a limit somewhere in Excel 2008.

I have asked Microsoft: I should see if I can raise XinXin if he's
around...

Cheers
