Cannot open important file.

I have tried to open a file I have been working on but everytime I try, it
doesn't open and comes up with...

The document name or path is not valid. Try these suggestions.
*Check the file permissions for the file or drive.
*Use the file open dialog box to locate document. (C:filename)

I do not understand the suggestions that have been given to me.
Please help!
