Cannot open in Word 2003 a Word doc saved 1992

I am using Office 2003 in XP SP3 on a PC and am trying to open a Word doc
last saved in 1992 (probably v.2 or 3), and get error message: "This file
type is blocked from opening in this version by your registry settings."

No help from MS Help so would be grateful for any tips.

This is the result of a security patch in SP3. Instructions for downloading
a file to reverse the block are in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938810
(use Method 1 under "How to enable blocked file types").

Another option for fixing many Word issues (eg to use Find and Replace
to change something in a header or footer or fix that table that has
gone stupid) is to download Open Office and open / fix / resave as
Word xx. It lack some of the needed features found in Word but is
far better at so many other things
