Cannot open my file & file size error

I cannot open my file and get the following message:

"'file.xls' cannot be accessed. The file may be read-
only, or you may be trying to access a read-only
location. Or, the server the document is stored on may
not be responding."

The other excel files in the folder open without any
problems.

The one odd thing is the file size now shows as only 1 Kb
when viewed through explorer, but when you click on the
file properties it shows 512 Kb which is the size it
should be.

Any ideas how to recover this file? I'm using excel97.
