cannot open office 2007

I all of a sudden cannot open any programs (excel, word, powerpoint) in
Office 2007, I get an error message saying not enough memory, or it says that
since it shut down incorrectly, it asks if I want to open in safe mode, then
won't let me. I uninstalled and reinstalled with same error message.

perhaps, you simply need
to do a little tune up on
your system.

you might try a cleanup
then a check disk and a
defrag.

to do the above, right click
on the drive and select properties.

the options will be on the
first and second tab, resp.

another thing to look into is
to double check your
virtual memory.

ensure you only have one and
instead of using auto, select
custom/fixed size instead.

set the initial size of 2 and
the max size will be recommended
at the bottom of that same virtual
memory window you're in.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/826513

incidentally, you should also
be able to run office via windows
safe mode, which is ascertained
by pressing the f8 key and selecting
the safe mode via the boot menu.

the above will be helpful to further
review the problem.

Have you tried detect and repair? Do Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs
(for XP) or Programs and Features (for Vista - you do need to tell us your
OS....) click on Office, click on Change and do a Repair.

Thanks for your reply.

I have Windows XP Home Edition
Service pack 3
2.33 ghz
2.00 GB Ram

I previously did a disk cleanup and defrag, I also performed the detect and
repair, with no help.

I did as you suggested and went into safe mode, and Word, Excel, Powerpoint,
etc did come up and work.

I checked the virtual memory and here is what it said:

Virtual memory is already at custom.
Initial size 2046
maximum size 4092

Minimum allowed: 2mb
Recommended: 3069 mb
Currently allocated: 2046 mb

I did not make any changes because because I thought I only had 2 mb of ram
anyway.

Any suggestions or questions?

ok, then here are a couple
of suggestions:

firstly, I would bring the
virtual memory down to
earth.

though I understand that
its current range was set
automatically, you can jot
these down for future reference.

however, at this time I think
it would be a good idea to
utilize the custom/fixed option.

set the initial to 2 and set the
max to 3069.

then reboot and try the normal
mode scenario again.

if fixing the vm didn't seem to
help, it will help with performance
in other areas.

but keep in mind, that it is
flexible and you can modify
the range later.

just keep in mind, not to delete
the pagefile.sys from the drive
and ensure you have a pagefile
set, otherwise the system will
stall on you.

the other suggestion is to try
starting word in safe mode.

the office safe mode as not
unlike the windows safe mode,
but this method runs in windows
normal mode.

hold the ctrl key while you click
on the word shortcut.

First I tried holding the control button down and clicking on the word
shortcut and it asked me if I wanted to go into safe mode and clicked yes
then I got the error message, "There is not enough memory or disk space to
run word."

On the virtual memory tab, the custom size button is checked. The system
managed size and no paging file is not checked. Is that correct? I guess I
don't know how I could delete pagefile.sys? What did you mean by ensuring
that I have a pagefile set?

To clarify your recommendation, you want me to set the initial to 2, from
2046, and set the maximum to 3069, from 4092? Then reboot and see if it works?

D

db ´¯`·.. >

yes, set the custom size
to the range windows provided
to you and I reiterated in the
prior posting.

then reboot.

I believe you will be successful
in initiating office normally again.

---------------

in regards to the page file, I
will elaborate a bit more on
the next posting.

Maximum size: 3069

Total paging file size for all drives

db ´¯`·.. >

ok, so that’s eliminated

we know that word starts
in windows safe mode but
won't start in normal mode.

-----------------

have you tried another method
of starting word by clicking
on start>run>winword /a

here is a link with more
solutions.

though most articles pertain
to older versions of word, word
07 has changed that much.

one of them describes
searching via the explorer
and renaming or deleting
the normal.dotx template

http://support.microsoft.com/search...y=not+enough+memory+to+start+word+2007&mode=r

perhaps deleting the normal.dotx
template is a reasonable solution

as you can simply re create it
by saving a document in word
as a template.

As a couple observations, using Word Safe Mode (holding Ctrl while starting)
disables more than starting Word using the /a switch. If Word won't start in
Safe Mode then there's nothing wrong with the installation and using the
"standard" troubleshooting methods won't provide a solution.

Additionally, only Word can create a true Normal template. If you save a
normal Word document/template as the Normal template then if you are using a
version of Word prior to Word 2007 you'll lose your built-in AutoText
entries. For Word 2007 (and previous versions) you'll lose built-in rich
text AutoCorrect entries and upon accessing the AutoCorrect dialog box it
will appear blank. There are a handful of other minor issues that can be
encountered as well when you create your own Normal template.

When you delete/rename the Normal template Word will create a new one upon
restarting.

I'm not sure if starting the Office applications in Windows Safe Mode was
ruled out but I suspect the issue lies in elsewhere. In past versions this
message indicated a primary Office file was corrupt.

Davek: try deleting/renaming the Office 12 folder in your Program Files,
reinstall Office, and apply all available updates using the "Office Updates"
link on this page (on the right side near the top):

yeah, the new office is
much trickery to locate
it's difficulties.

just some fyi, the o.p.
tested office in windows
safe mode and it was
functional.

normal.dotx issues are
not uncommon and was
likely a logical step.

the other that might be
an issue are the file locations,
especially the one for the
work file.

my office crashed and kept
getting messages about
the work file, after I restored
my system from a backup.

by chance I resolved the issue
but not after grinding my teeth
for several days.

but I'm not letting the office team
off the hook and I am awaiting
the methods they would use
to correct the problem I had.

I missed that part in the thread. If Office runs in Windows Safe Mode then
the likely problem is a device driver such as a printer, scanner, graphics,
etc.

Yes but only if starting in Word Safe Mode (holding Ctrl) rectifies the
problem. :)

Which would be the location of the Temp files.

What's the location of your Temp folder? Open the Windows Explorer and in
the address bar type: %temp%

Word and Outlook both use this folder.

You might try exiting all applications and deleting all of the temp files
you can from this folder as well. Also, does it happen to be a compressed
folder??

well, the location is
c:\temp for both tmp
and temp files.

and the internet temp
folder is located there
as well.

the temp folder was
something I looked into
and cleaning it was to
no avail.

I also looked at other
file locations as well.

but in the end, I think
the problem I had with
office, indexing and path
name too long errors
was a result of a corrupted
profile.

that’s why I awaiting a response

I have tried all that you have suggested, still no luck. I renamed, and then
deleted, but uninstalling also deletes it as well.

I still have the same error messages when trying to open all of the office
applications.

Any other thoughts?

I appreciate your help, all of you.

Since you indicated that the Office applications work when you start in
Windows Safe Mode then you should rule out your device drivers, such as
printer driver, graphics driver, etc and your antivirus software. What
antivirus application do you use?

Also, did you happen to install the Office 2007 Compatibility Pack? Did you
have Office 2007 installed as a beta at any time? Think back to anything you
may have done, even if you don't think it's significant, prior to
encountering the error.

I have Norton Internet Security.

No I do not have the 2007 compatibility pack.

I really can't think of anything that I have done just prior to it not
working.
