Cannot open or preview PNG and GIF attachents

Exchange 2007, Outlook 2003, 2007, Windows XP and Windows 7.

I cannot open or preview PNG and GIF files. Our spam filter is set to ignore
these attachments so I know no action was taken on them from that.

When I try to open them I get the error -
"Paint cannot read ths file. This is not a valid bitmap file, or its format
is not currenly supported."

Any help - greatly appreciated.
