"Cannot open the Outlook window" with OL 2007 on Vista x64

B

bnborg

I get the error when I try to open Outlook either on Vista or on Windows 7
x64. On the other hand, Outlook 2007 continues to work fine on XP x64.

This recently happened, first on Vista and the next day (today) on Windows
7. I'm thinking it must be a recent "security" update from Microsoft Update.

I have tried SCANPST and Microsoft Office Diagnostics. I searched on
Microsoft and found a "Fix it For Me" link and tried it. I also tried
manually deleting the profiles in my registry hive as suggested on the same
web page.

Nothing I tried worked. I still can't start Outlook on Vista or Windows 7,
but I still can on XP.

Anyone have any ideas?

I have tried Outlook with the /safe switch, with the same results, "Cannot
open...". Or did you mean Windows Safe Mode?

Yes I have rebooted, several times on each machine.

Is it significant that these are virtual machines on a Windows Server with
Hyper-V?

least once after it began? Was Outlook updated to SP2?

I tested a non-virtual machine, installing Office on a Vista x64 machine that
had not had it installed yet. Outlook works ok there. There might be
something that changed with virtual machines.

I meant outlook's safe mode. Outlook normally works ok in virtual machines
(both virtual pc and vmware) - it could be some thing with the hyper-v or
just a bad install.

I suddenly have this problem after Outlook's working for 9 months.
This laptop is running Vista Ultimate 64 bit and the day following an
MS Update, I started getting "Cannot start Microsoft Office
Outlook." [2007] "Cannot open the Outlook window." Reboots and cold
starts do not help, nor does System Mechanic or Avast! Prior to this
happening, I've just received "(Not Responding)" and sluggish behavior
with 4GB of memory and 180GG of hard disk space free. 3rd party
programs do not appear to have been written for 64 bit Vista. If it
was the Update, such programs are unlikely to work.

Just downloaded and installed two, new today, critical updates. One
was a repeat of the spam filter update of yesterday. All these have
done is extend the period of time Outlook waits before displaying the
same darn error message. Prior to this, I ran scanpst.exe which found
and repaired errors. However, this did not impact the problem. Phooey.

try uninstalling Avast - see if outlook works (you may need to use office
diagnostics), then reinstall it.

Addins may also cause problems - xobni, linkedin and similar.

The only thing I can find in the Event Viewer is a mention in the Microsoft
Office Sessions log under the Applications and Service Logs. It says there
was a session that lasted 18 seconds and ended normally.

I agree with Airborne that this seems to have been caused by an update.

I'm sure it is - outlook normally works in vm's.

Did you have the SP2 update installed before this happened? We know some
antivirus programs cause problems if it is running or integrated when SP2
updates. Fixing it can be as simple as reinstalling the antivirus or addin.
