Cannot open Word and Word Documents

I’m using MS Word 2003 and when I clicked on the MS icon to open it, the MS
box appeared on the screen, but was not opening. To close it, I had to use
the Task Manager and go to “Processes†to end this process. When I tried to
open MS Word again, I got a message suggesting that I open it in a safe
mode—and I clicked ‘yes’. When in the safe mode, I ran “Detect and Repairâ€
and I got a message that everything was completed successfully.
Unfortunately, working in the safe mode, I was able to create only a new
document; whenever I tried to open any existing document, or a template, it
did not open—I got a message at the left bottom corner saying, 'Running Virus
Scan' and MS Word became totall frozen--to close it I had to use the Task
Manager again.
I even tried to reisntall MS Word, using the original MS Word CD (Microsoft
Office XP--it came with my Dell computer), but after a supposedly successful
intallation, the problems persist. Of course, I rebooted my computer a
couple of times, but to no avail.
This is the first time I'm experiencing such a servious problem with MS
Word...and I'd really appreciate any suggestions you may have.

Have you got a locally installed printer driver set as the Windows Default?

Hello Terry,

Yes, I do, but it never caused any problems.
I think I will seek professional help--I spent hours repairing and even
reinstalling office and my problems only got worse.
