Cannot open word documents in word

I am trying to open my saved and emailed word documents in Word and it won't.
The screen just remains the same, then comes up with the message Microsoft
Office has stopped working.
It then shuts down and tries to reopen Word, which doesn't work.
What can I do??

Which version of Word?
Which OS?
Are they both patched up to date?
Which AV are you using?
Have you tried saving the documents to the HDD before trying to open them?
Can you open Word on its own (not by trying to open a document from
Outlook)?

I have the same problem.
Vista
MS Office 207 Home Premium
Auto updates on for Vista and Office, so they are both as current as
whatever MS is pushing.
Fine for over a year.
Suddenly last month Word would not open a document from the file directory.
A blank Word doc would open. Try to close the document and Word crashes and
restarts, and exhibits the same behavior.
Opening the Word files from within Word Open command was a work around at
first, but soon that stopped working too.

No time to futz with this so i bought a new laptop (Lenovo U110, prior was
Dell XPS). Now after about 2 weeks, with latest updates, I see the same thing
happening again!!

Crashed so often MS ran its auto diagnostic. No problem discovered.

This is painful!!

What else did you install on your new laptop? Did you check the AV settings?
If it worked when you first got it, something else has been done since.
Frequently, corrupting the Word Data Key causes many problems. Try deleting
it and see if that resolves the problem.
