cannot open word file

I cannot open word files, when i double click on them. It opens word, but not
the file.
If i am logged onto the machine as the administrator of the local machine i
do not have a problem.
Office version is 2003

If you are able to open Word, the application, try opening the files by
using File-Open (Ctrl-O). Navigate to the location of the desired file(s)
and click on them.

Thank you for replying. I know i can do that. But why does it not open the
document that i double click ? I want to be able to double click on a word
document and have it open, without having to take a additional step of again
clicking file and open and then selecting the file again.
