cannot open word files after upgrade from 97 to 2003

after upgrade from office 97 to office 2003, cannot open previous word
documents. Norton antivirus box opens up saying it's unable to scan my pc
for infections because a critical error occurred during the scan. Diabling
norton did not help. Further message from word is that the required file is
not available even thougn i can see the file in my desktop folder.

Disable the Office Plugin that comes with Norton Antivirus (but
don't disable Norton AutoProtect). See
