Cannot open Word files--just deleted Norton Anti-Virus yesterday

I've been getting the same errors as I see others have posted about recently...

The file _____________ is not available.

I suppose I caused my own problem. Yesterday, I deleted Norton Anti-Virus
2003 because I kept getting some error message which told me that the CCL or
something like that had failed and that it was from Symantec. Since Norton
Anti-Virus was the only program I had from Symantec, I figured it was the
source of the problem. At any rate, I hadn't used the Norton Anti-Virus for
over a year because my subscription had expired and I have another virus
program which works well.

So what should I do now to get my Word programs which I have saved to open?

Thanks in advance!

Strange as it may seem, uninstalling Norton Antivirus doesn't
always uninstall the Norton Office Plugin. Use Windows Explorer
or My Computer to search for the OFFICEAV.DLL file on the hard
drive (be sure to include system and hidden files/folders in the
search options). If you find it, note the folder where it is
located, and use the "regsvr32 /u" method described in
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=329820 "How to use Office
programs with the Norton AntiVirus Office plug-in" to unregister
the DLL.

I did find the file.

It's in a file named 'Norton Anti-Virus" which still have many items listed
in it. Is it really deleted?

I don't know how to follow the directions in the link you sent me because
the computer can't find the Norton Anti-Virus program when I try to open it.

What should I try?

You're right. I did not delete it; I uninstalled it. Does that mean it is
still on my computer? How do I get rid of it?

To garfield-n-odie:

Here is where I think I messed up with your directions. I clicked on the
link and then went to "Method 2 Disable Norton Anti-Virus Office plug-in."
Then I followed the directions for "Norton AntiVirus 2003" since that is what
I had. I did not try to open the "officeav.dll file." What I tried to open
was Norton AntiVirus itself to follow those directions.

Now I see farther down the page the directions to which you are referring.
Sorry I missed them before.

Should I follow them even though I have the 2003 version and the directions
are for the 2000 version?

Thank you for your patience. Last night when I was following these
directions it was way past my normal bedtime and I was desperately trying to
get to my Word files.

I do appreciate your expertise.
Sincerely,
Lisa in Kentucky
