cannot open word from double clicking within windows explorer

I am not using Norton Antri-Virus and do not have the .dll file identified to
cause this problem. I am using Win XP with Office 2003 with an up-to date
McAfee AV.

Word Docs (and all other Office apps) open fine from within Word & their
respective apps.

Anne, Thanks for your response. I finally broke down after trying everything
under the sun. I spent over 1.5 hours (and $35.) on the phone with Microsoft
Tech Support. What finally fixed the problem was a Detect & Repair of
Offfice 2003. I did this before but what was different this time was that I
did not place the Office CD in the drive right away (like I did before) I
waited until the system found a corrupt file (.msi) first, then it prompted
me to insert the CD to reload that specific file. Key learning from this
excercise: When doing a Detect & Repair, DO NOT insert the CD right away,
wait to be prompted or the system will not detect the missing/corrupted file.
Small but very significant point. Hope this helps others.
