cannot open word or any word documents.

i cannot open word or any documents in word. a message
comes on the screen that either says: "System is busy
waiting to close program", or "this sytem is dangerously
low in resources. Would you like to terminate the
following application?", or "WIN Word (not responding)."
Then the whole computer locks up, and i have to shut down
and restart the computer. What can i do? thanks lee

This could be caused by a corrupt Normal.dot or a virus.

I'd start with a corrupt Normal.dot first. Locate Normal.dot and
rename it to OldNormal.dot. Word will create a new one upon starting.

If this resolves the problem, any customizations can be copied to the
new Normal.dot via the Organizer (Tools/Templates and Add-Ins) Once
this is complete OldNormal.dot can be discarded. If the problem still
exists then you can delete the new Normal.dot and rename your
OldNormal.dot to Normal.dot.
