Cannot open Word (or Excel) files through Windows Explorer in Wind

I installed Office XP on a PC with pre-installed Works--Word 2002--and I am
now unable to open any previously saved Office files. Prior to installing XP
SP2, every time I attempted to open an Office file the app would open but
would return "file unavailable" , however I now receive a large message
indicating the file has a virus. (McAfee security package from Premium MSN is
up to date) I can create and save new files, but I cannot re-open them on my
PC even though I can send them to another computer and they load perfectly.

I have tried uninstalling Works, uninstalling and re-installing Office XP
and later even installing Office 2003 Standard (All licensing legit,
Microsoft) and I can't seem to find a way to solve this problem. Any help
would be greatly appreciated.

Before you got McAfee, was there a version of Norton/Symantec Antivirus
installed on your computer? If so, then the OFFICEAV.DLL file from Norton
could still be registered in Windows, even if you have uninstalled Norton.
Search for the OFFICEAV.DLL file on your computer (include hidden and system
files and folders). If you find it, note the folder where it is located, and
use the "regsvr32 /u" method in http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=329820 to
unregister it. You only have to run this command once, not every time you
restart Windows.
