cannot open Word program or documents

A recent problem; one day Word would not open at all.
Click on desktop icon and it freezes my whole machine.
Can't open any documents either through other avenues.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled with no success. Any
suggestions? I'd really appreciate help. Thanks
