Cannot paste picture from Excel 2008 into Word 2008

Darren

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

Just updated to 12.1.3 and now I cannot copy a few cells from a spreadsheet and paste them into word using "Paste Special > Picture"

I keep getting the error "There is not enough memory or disk space to complete the operation." I have over 2GB free of memory, and 30GB of disk space, so that cant be the problem to copy 12 cells.

Any ideas?

Just tried to paste the same cells. as a Microsoft Excel object into Powerpoint 2008 and Word 2008. This causes Excel to crash (even though I don't have Excel as the active window).

This seems to be completely broken. I have no idea how this could have made it out of quality control. Perhaps it's just my configuration, but I highly doubt that.

I was able to paste them in by first copying the cells into a blank spreadsheet as values, and then pasting them.

Something still is wrong here

That's confirmed:

On OS 10.4.11:

Word 2008 V 12.1.3 will:

1) Paste as a table

2) Fail with an out-of-memory error when pasting as a Picture

3) Crash when pasting as a PDF.

{Sigh}

Hi Darren:

If you want Microsoft to do something, you should send Microsoft a message.
Use Help>Send feedback to take you to the Microsoft feedback area.

Microsoft does not read this forum. Just fellow users, and we already know
how bad it is.

Cheers

Getting Copy/Paste right is so 1986.

MSFT, get this fixed pronto.

Hi, I have troubles special-pasting a link to a graph from Excel to Word. The message says that it is impossible to obtain necessary data from the excel worksheet. Thank you!

J

That's correct. That's one of several complex features that don't work
right in Office 2008.

Sorry about that: You will have to paste unlinked.

You might want to use Help>Send Feedback to alert Microsoft that you would
like this to work.

Cheers

I have reported this through the Send Feedback channel as requested.

This is very disappointing. The whole point of buying a suite of products is to ensure interoperability among the pieces, but it seems like most links across the product line flat out don't work.

This functionality was present well before the "Publish" and "Subscribe" model of System 7 (circa 1991), and to have it broken to this extent is laughable.

I have always been one to defend Microsoft from the wave of attacks from anti-MS crusaders, but this is one clear example where MS let a substandard release out the door. MS, if you are reading this, please fix this soon.

Microsoft isn't watching; this newsgroup is populated, with only very
occasional exception, by people who are simply users of Microsoft products.
However, we understand someone from Microsoft's Mac Business Unit does read,
log and distribute comments sent via the Help menu.

Hi John;

Why am I the only one in the world not seeing these problems?

Office 12.1.3, OS X 10.4.11, G5 Dual 2 GHz, 3.5 GB

Simply for fun I just created a Word document copied data & charts from
Excel files & pasted in various ways - including some "as links". Neither
Word nor Excel hiccupped, let alone crashed.

I never did see a problem with Pasting As PDF - it was then *saving as .doc*
that caused Word to crash, but that was fixed in 12.1.3 - at least it's no
longer occurring here. I saved the same file (containing 6 objects -
including PDF - pasted from Excel) in .doc with no issues as well.

Could this be an Intel only problem?

I'm on a MBP Santa Rosa 2.2 w/ 4GB

Just to follow up on this:

We did inadvertently introduce a problem in the 12.1.3 update that causes
pasting a range of cells to Word or PowerPoint as picture or PDF to fail or
sometimes crash. As far as we're aware, though, this only occurs if the
sheet you're copying from contains an embedded OLE object (an Equation
Editor object, Graph object, etc.). If you remove the OLE object from the
sheet before copying the range, Paste Special to Word and PowerPoint should
work fine. If that's not an option for you, this workaround should also
work:

Copy the range in Excel
Command + N to create a new workbook
Command +V to paste the range into the new workbook
Command + C to copy the range in the new workbook (that doesn¹t contain an
OLE object)
Select Word and Paste Special As Picture or PDF

We are investigating this and hope to get a fix out soon.

Thanks,

Pat

I appreciate the response to this issue. My business depends on my ability to present financial data, so having this cut/paste issue has become an serious problem.

I discovered the workaround on my own...I've been using a copy/paste values then formats then column sizes in a new workbook and then copy/paste picture--that seems to work.

I am not aware of any OLE objects on the sheet that I am copying, so I cannot confirm that the problem is limited to that. I do have a few macros in the doc (that only work with 2004/07 obviously), but other than that, the sheet is just some references to cells in other sheets of the workbook.

I can send you a copy of the file for testing purposes if you would like. Please let me know if you would like a copy.

Thanks for the offer of the file. Yes, I would be happy to look at your
file. Please send directly to me: (e-mail address removed).

Thanks Darren. Its a very good temporary solution. Hope they can fix it soon.
If I may ask, is your business related to Real Estate. My company provides project feasibility services and would like to contact you if u r interested. if so, can u give me an e-mail address pls. Anyways thx again for solving the copy/paste issue.

Pat McMillan

Just an update on this issue. In working with Darren, we discovered that
this problem can occur when there are no OLE objects on the Excel sheet. In
Darren's case, the fact that his workbooks were set to Normal View seemed to
be causing the bug to occur. If you encounter this problem, you might want
to check the View in Excel. If it's set to Normal, changing it to Page
Layout View before copying the range in Excel seems to allow you to avoid
the problem.

Thanks,

Pat
