Cannot Print from Word in 10.4.9

C

This is a new thread because the old one got polluted.
I have tried all the Print troubleshooting steps and have come to
believe that there is an incompatibility between Word 2004 and OS X
10.4.9.

I have completely updated Word, using all the updates available on the
Microsoft Mac site.
I have un-installed and re-installed my Printer and drivers using the
newest available from the manufacturers website (tried no less than 5
different printers)
I have attempted to Preview the print job, then print from Preview.app
I have attempted to Print to PDF
I have removed all the preference files relating to "Word" and "Print"
in my ~/Library/Preferences folder
I have rebooted numerous times

All of the above steps still concluded in the same useless error
message:

Word cannot print due to a problem with the current printer.
Make sure you have a printer selected in the Print Center. You may
need to print again or adjust your printer settings.

Also of interest, the "Quick Preview" area in the print dialog is
blank, and shows 0/0 pages, regardless of the length of the document.
I represent 6 Mac users of an otherwise Windows-driven organization,
all of us having the same issue after upgrading to 10.4.9.

Certainly not. Works fine here. And just about everywhere else. Imagine
the uproar!

Restore your backup of 10.4.8 and try again. Something is almost
certainly borked with your upgrade to 10.4.9.

Before you do..
What happens when you print to PDF from Word after selecting "Any
Printer" in page set-up?

Did you ever trash your normal template?

Oh dear! Is the printer hanging off a PC somewhere?

What is common between all 6 Macs that might make them different from
all other Macintoshes (by 5 o'clock this afternoon [1])?

1. Sorry. I have been reading Kipling's Just So Stories to my
grand-daughter. That just slipped out. ;-)

Same error

I have just tried a complete Combo Update to 10.4.9. Same error.
Only Office applications fail to print. I can print from TextEdit,
TextWrangler, Mail.app, FireFox, iCal, and Photoshop.
Did you ever trash your normal template?

Yes, after doing this and removing preference files, Word takes a
looooong time to start up, and it still won't print.
Oh dear! Is the printer hanging off a PC somewhere?

I have tried printers over AppleTalk, printers over Bonjour, and
Windows sharing printers, as well as a directly (USB) connected
printer.
What is common between all 6 Macs that might make them different from
all other Macintoshes

They are all new Intel Mac laptops, factory installed with 10.4.6,
upgraded through 10.4.8 to 10.4.9. There were two different Office
Installation media used, 3 on a Student multi-license kit, the
remainder on Open Charity licenses.
You might consider for a moment that it is telling you the truth.

I briefly considered that, but I still suspect my computer is lying to
me, cause it doesn't think I can handle the truth.

I have the same problem.

After upgrading my Mac to OS X 10.4.9, Microsoft Office X will not
print any docs. I can print from other programs, Pages, FireFox,
Etc., without a problem.
I get the following error message:
"WORD cannot print due to a problem with the current printer. Make
sure you have a printer selected in the Print Center. You may need to
print again or adjust your printer settings

I've tried to print/Preview to PDF, and I get the same error.

Some detials on my setup.
iMac Core Duo, 1.5 GB RAM 100GB free space.
Office X
HP 3600n LaserJet

Here is what I have already tried.
Repaired permissions
Re-optimized system with Onyx-x
Ran maintenance scripts
Deleted various .plist files (Office, Word, Printer)
Removed & re-added printer form print center.
Updated printer drivers
Re-installed original printer drivers from OSX disk
Removed and reinstalled OfficeX
Updated OfficeX to 10.1.9

None of this has worked, I am at the end of my rope.
Any ideas?

And the same problem here :( Can't print since the 10.4.9 update.
Blank preview in Word and I tried various things to solve the problem,
without luck. The printer I'm using is a HP PSC 2115 (All-in-One). I'm
frequently searching for a solution, but didn't found one :( Hopefully
someone has the golden tip that makes my Mac feel like a Mac (that
means: without problems) :) It really drives me crazy :(

You don't specify what version of Word/Office you're using or what you mean
by "various things", but first make sure Office is fully updated. Next,
apply the OS X 10.4.9 *Combo* updater, Repair Permissions & see if that
fixes things. If not there are a number of other demons possibly involved....

For future reference, you'd do better to submit a new post rather than
tapping into another which has been dead for 30 days... The only reason I
even saw it is because I was bored:) It's fine to refer to having reviewed
one or more previous threads - in fact I admire your willingness to do some
independent research - but also state the particulars of your specific case.

Thanks Bob for Your response. Sorry, I didn't noticed that this thread
was dead for 30 days, it's just one of the few pages that I find about
this topic. So I thought it might be of interest to someone that there
are more people with the same problem.

The reason I said "various things" is a) because I don't know exactly
what I have tried already and b) because I had spent so much time on
this problem and I got kind a angry (again) :) But Yes, I know I
should be more specific the next time. Sorry :)

Ok, it got worse. Until today I wasn't able to print from any
application. Also, the "PDF" button in the print dialogs (for instance
to save a webpage as PDF and e-mail it directly to someone), didn't
work (I don't remember what the alert exactly said, but it was
something like 'the document could not be printed', that's all). I
played around with the Console, Finder and Pacifist (to find files in
the packages on the Mac OS X Install Discs) for a few hours and tried
to solve my problem. I have now replaced all the .dylib files in /
System/Library/Printers/Libraries/ with the original dylib files from
Mac OS X Install Dic (find them with Pacifist, they are in the
Essentials package or something like that) and everything works fine
right now :) The preview is back in the Word print dialog (and it
doesn't say 0 / 0 right under the preview) and I can print PDF's
again :) Finally. But I really don't know what happened with the
dylib files what caused this problem :s

John McGhie [MVP Word, Word Mac]

Hey Ruel:

What happened was that one or more .dylib files got out of synch with
others on the system.

This can happen if you apply service packs to one product but not the
operating system, or if a service back/updater fails to apply correctly.

It's a pain: the price we pay for power is often complexity.

Glad you solved your problem. In future, you might mention that you have
intervened in your system to that depth in your first post, so we don;t
waste your time suggesting things you've already covered.

After the blood-pressure reduces to normal operating limits :)

Cheers
