Cannot receive emails in Entourage 2008

P

Penel523

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Email Client: pop

I have a new Mac and successfully set up Entourage. However, yesterday I realized that I had stopped receiving email. I tried setting up Thunderbird with the same settings and can receive through there.

Sending works fine. I have checked and rechecked the settings. I deleted and reentered the setting for incoming mail. Still nothing comes in.

I get two different error messages:

Entourage cannot connect to the server. Verify that your computer is connected to the network.

An operation on the server timed out. The server may be down, overloaded, or there may be too much net traffic.

Any suggestions?

Who is your ISP for connecting to the Internet? Several, including
Comcast, have begun blocking port 25, which is the default port for
sending mail.

Check with your E-mail service and ask whether they offer alternative
sending ports. You can plug this into your settings under Tools -->
Accounts... --> your mail account --> Account Settings --> Sending mail
--> Click here for advanced sending options.

Hope this helps!

William,
The OP said his/her problem is receiving, not sending.

Could it be a keychain problem?

Ah, oopsie!

Could be a keychain problem or could be a problem with the identity. I'd
suggest using Entourage menu --> Switch Identity... and setting up the
account there to see if that works. If it does then repairing the
keychain using the Keychain Access utility would be a first start.
Deleting the POP account keychain item and re-entering the password in
Entourage would be the second. Rebuilding the Database would be the third.

Entourage is extremely finicky about downloading some emails. I know Apple
Mail will download a message that Entourage refuses to download. Until that
message is deleted on the server, Entourage will balk.

Try running Keychain First Aid. If that doesn't help, test in a new Identity
and see if Entourage connects. (set account to leave on server for testing)

I am not receiving emails through entourage. This happened on Sept 1st and since then I have been using an alternative web mail site.
An automatic download had just taken place within the last 24 hours and I think there is a connection.
Can someone walk me through suggestions to repair...and I mean walk me through in baby steps as I am a computer novice and really get lost in the lingo...for example what is a keychain? See what I mean?
Any help really appreciated, L P

1. If you can receive but not send then you have a bad SMTP configuration
2. If you can send but not receive you have a bad POP or IMAP configuration

You can try re-entering info.
You can delete account and create a new one.
Using copy/paste can result in an extra space being added. Type carefully.
Check your Keychain for corruption.

See this page for help setting up your account.

Account Setup

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/accounts/index.html>

The Keychain is an application in the Utilities folder. Help in the Menu bar
is your friend.

Keychain First Aid will help repair your keychain.

Go to the Keychain Access Menu and drag down to Keychain First Aid.
Enter your login password, click 'Verify' and 'Start'.

You will probably get some items colored red. Click 'Repair' and 'Start'. If
some items are still red, 'Repair' again.

Test to see if the problem is fixed. If not...

1. Go to the system keychain and delete the entry for that account.

2. Go to Entourage, select 'accounts' from the Tools menu, choose the
account that was giving you trouble and click on Edit. Select the 'account
settings' tab.

3. Delete the password from the password box in the POP settings (leaving
the box empty).

4. Close the account window.

5. Re-open the account window and enter your proper password, check the
'save in keychain' check box and close the window again.

Let me know if you need further help.
