Cannot remove a mysterious external link to another workbook.

I’m using Excel 2004 for Mac v.11.3.6
I have built a 20+ sheet workbook _with no intended external links to
other workbooks._
There are many internal links, but no external links that I am aware of.
Have been using it for a year or more with no problems like the one
described below.

Problem:
After some extensive work yesterday, I now find that I keep getting a
message box that says:
“The workbook you opened contains automatic links to information in
another workbook.”

I then click on “Edit Links” box.

I then see that the source file for the mysterious external link is an
Excel workbook document that I do not recognize, cannot find in the
finder, or in the trash, or on any other drive.

I highlighted the listed source file (the only one) and tried the “Break
Link” button.

I then get the small message window warning me about how breaking links
is permanent, cannot be undone, and converts formulas and external
references it their existing values.

I click the “Break Link” button in that window which returns me to the
original “Links’ window, where the “Automatic” radio button is selected,
but the “Manual” button is grayed out. I then click the “Close” button,
and do a “Save” on my original workbook.

However the problem returns each time I open my original workbook.

After a laborious manual search in my original workbook I cannot find
any cell with an external link.

Then, I did create a new ‘test’ workbook and did a “Change Source” to
it, which did change the source, but that didn’t help, and it won’t take
a “Break Link” command either.

Am still getting the same message box every time I open my original work
book, and nothing seems to be a problem with my data calcs in it. It
still works perfectly.

I could used some help in getting rid of this “false?” external link .

NOTE: I am getting this same problem in a couple of other workbooks that
happen to be in the same folder with my original workbook, but which I
have not worked with since before this problem! They also have this
false link with attendant link message window.

Thanks...
