cannot remove office 2000

I cannot remove office 2000 from a laptop running Windows
XP. I have tried removing from the control panel and from
the CD. When it gets to the end of the uninstall process
it says Office Set up is completed. Sure enough I check
and Office 2000 is still listed in the add/remove and all
shortcuts work.

Any suggestions ?
