cannot remove page number in footer

I have a page number in a footer that I cannot remove! I've tried
highlighting and deleting, highlighting and backspace, highlighting and
typeover and nothing works. ALt-F9 shows (PAGE). I cannot type anything
after the page number either.

Try this:

a. Double click on the page number to see the Header/Footer frames
b. Move the pointer over thr page number, until it becomes a four-headed arrow
c. Click Delete
