Cannot remove toolbars

B

Bob Eyster

I'm using Outlook 2003 and I have some toolbar I do not want displayed.

When i go to View and un-check the toolbars I wish to remove they will not
stick. When I close Outlook and re-open it, the toolbars are back.

Is there a way to make the removal stick?

Thanks in advance

Try renaming your outcmd.dat file to outcmd.old while Outlook is closed.
Outlook will rebuild the default toolbars the next time you open it. If
your changes to the toolbars "stick" after doing this, then you know it was
the outcmd.dat file causing the problem. Make sure to make a backup of the
new outcmd.dat file so you can restore it if you ever run into the same
problem again.

Note: If you're using Windows 2000 or XP, you'll need to search in hidden
and system folders to find the outcmd.dat file.

Thanks for the info Jocelyn but it didn't work. The setting won't stick.

Are they Outlook toolbars or were these toolbars installed by third party
add-ins?

Both, I can't remove any of them, outlook's or third party, and have it
stick.

Outlook doesn't have any control over the third party toolbars, so deleting
or renaming outcmd.dat wouldn't change those necessarily. Are you sure you
deleted or renamed the right outcmd.dat file (the one in your Windows
profile)? You might also want to try creating a new Outlook mail
profile...

Hi Jocelyn,

Yes, I'm sure I renamed the correct file. I did a search for OUTCMD and it
found the file I renamed (outcmdold.dat) and the new one that outlook
created (outcmd.dat).

If MS/Outlook has no control over third party toolbars how do you get rid
of them? There's no option in the third party program to remove it.

I was able to remove the Standard toolbar and it stuck.

Thanks

I really have no idea how you would get rid of the third party toolbars if
the parent program doesn't give you the option...you'd have to contact the
program's vendor and see if they can help.

There is one more thing you can try -- go into Tools | Options | Other |
Advanced Options and you'll see two buttons near the bottom for Add-Ins.
Click each of those and see if you can disable the third party toolbars that
way. Depending on the add-in you're using, it's possible they will let you
disable the toolbar separately from the actual add-in program -- or you can
just disable or remove the add-in itself if you're not using it.
