Cannot rename pasted objects from Visio

Ok, novice PPT question. I'm working on my first animated slide in
powerpoint starting from a Visio that I created. I've been able to do
a pretty good job but using the technique that I've been using doesn't
seem to allow me to rename the objects when I paste them into
powerpoint. Here's my technique:

1. Create a master graphic in Visio (with many different shapes,
arrows, graphics, glifs etc.)

2. Select only certain items in Visio that will become an object in my
powerpoint (for instance, I might select one of the arrows that will
have it's own timeslice in my ppt animation)

3. Hit CTRL-C in Visio (with only a couple of items selected)

4. Go to my powerpoint and hit CTRL-V

Here's where the problem comes up. I can't seem to find any properties
edit for the object I just pasted in PPT. When I right-click I get a
context menu that has a "Visio Object" sub-menu which gives me a clue
that it is an embedded Visio object but I'm sure it has it's own
powerpoint identity. In fact, on the Custom Animations window in
powerpoint I see that powerpoint assigned it the default name of
Object1.

So where's the properties window for Object1? I want to rename my
objects!!

And, is my technique a good best-practice for creating an animated
slide in powerpoint? Is there a better way? Are there pros or cons to
the way I'm doing this?

There aren't any ways to rename the objects that are gonna show up in the
Custom Animation pane. That pane (pain) has its own naming convention, and
those names unfortunately cannot be changed.

Best I can suggest is to right-click the pasted object and select
Format/Object. On the "Web" tab, type in some descriptive text. This is the
text that would show up as alt text if you converted the PPT file to HTML.

Now use the Select Multiple icon. You'll have to add it to your toolbar.
Tools/Customize/Commands/Drawing and drage "select multiple objects" to a
toolbar. I usually put it on my drawing toolbar.

Once it's on the toolbar, click it to see a list of items on your slide. You
should be able to select your object more easily because of the descriptive
text you added. Unfortunately, though, the object number in the Select
Multiple dialog and the object number in the Custom Animation task pane
won't necessarily match. Once you've selected the object on the slide (using
the select multiple tool if necessary), it will also be highlighted in the
list on the Custom Animation task pane if it has an animation applied.
